There is a large consumer demand for seedless grape for fresh and dry fruit consumption. Nowadays, most breeding programs focus on the generation of new cultivars combining seedlessness together with disease resistance, large berry size, muscat flavour and crispiness.

Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) has developed a seeded hybrid named ARI 516 earlier which is multipurpose, moderately resistant, high yielding variety with musky flavor, good taste. Consumer acceptance of ARI 516 can further be improved through imparting seedlessness in the variety. A seedless mutant of ARI 516 is identified through mutation breeding. We aim to establish the seedless mutant of ARI 516 as a cultivar by standardizing horticultural practices.

Also, the investigation of molecular basis of seedlessness will enhance the current understanding of grape seed development and shed light on the possible mechanism by which grape seed formation is controlled. The genomic and genetic resources will be useful to develop seedless cultivars in grapes.
